You get to play with two new civilisations i.e. Some of the biggest changes include Art of War modes and Historical Battles. There are three new features and other quality-of-life upgrades that don’t feel exciting enough for old and new players alike. When comparing AOE III Definitive Edition with its predecessor, new additions will feel lacklustre. It also affects the pacing of the game which may not be great for hardcore RTS players who like to play the traditional way. It takes attention away from what AOE games are known for, building and fighting with other empires. Having said that, we spent way too much time exploring and even the game puts more focus on this mechanic, which is also a big complaint amongst players in the community. These cards add a new facet to RTS games which makes you think harder about what your next move will be. You can use different types of cards that can be used together for these shipments. You also gain experience which can be used to collect shipments from your home base. You get an explorer unit in every match where they can cover a broader area of the map and collect treasures along the way. The biggest difference you will find between AOE: III and other games in the franchise is that the game is more than just city-building. Having said that, we cannot comment about balancing for the multiplayer mode as players tend to find exploits with more time they spend with the game. It provides a challenge for everyone no matter which empire you choose to play with. We loved the fact that developers Forgotten Empires and Tantalus did not mess with the balancing of the game much. Similarly, you can play as the Russians and it will be harder for you to create a thriving economy but far easier to amass an army. For example, the Dutch can produce a lot of gold which you can use to build a great army, however it will be costly. You also need to be wary of which civilisation you choose to play with as each has its advantages and disadvantages. You need to be careful about how you use your resources as you may need it right away to build more stuff you need or save some for the future when you develop new technologies and powerful units.

Once you go from one “Age” to the other, even more buildings, military units and other resources open up for you to keep building your empire. You start out collecting essential resources that you need to build up barracks, homes and research new technologies so that you can develop new weapons. Much like any RTS game, you will start with a Town Center and a few villagers that help in gathering resources for building your city and military. Your main goal is to build up an empire that is not only technologically advanced but can also take over regions occupied by the four other empires. the British, the Dutch, the Ottomans, the Sioux or the Japanese. You can get to pick from five of the major civilisations from the time i.e. If you’ve played the original, the game is set in the 17th century and takes you on a journey up to the 19th century.

Our only complaint is that it is way too faithful to the original as there were no new features or mechanics added to to the overall gameplay. The game is a faithful remaster of the original and there’s no denying that AOE: III was one of the best games that came out in the series. I still prefer AOE2’s multiplayer but the game truly shines in its campaign mode. Proving my worth in the multiplayer mode quickly showed me that I needed to brush up my RTS skills that have become rusty. I spent most of my time in the campaign mode but my experience in the multiplayer mode is also worth mentioning. However, it is prudent to point out Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is a lot of fun once you get into it. During our playthrough of the game, we had special moments just like they were 15 years ago while also getting a bit overshadowed by its predecessor, both the original and the remaster. In many ways, this is the perfect remaster fans could have asked for while some changes baffled me as well. The original game launched 15 years ago and Microsoft Studios remastered, in my opinion, one of the most underrated games in the franchise and the real-time strategy (RTS) genre. When the Age Of Empires III: Definitive Edition was announced, I probably screamed at the top of my lungs because it evoked so many feelings from my childhood.
